Or why do women get pregnant a second time?
Or why do yachtsmen do it over and over again?
By virtue of Arch’medes law.
O’er oceans our great vessels float
A life of adventure, to whit.
To see new lands strange and remote.
But what do you do at that shore,
Where sun, salt and weather promote
Such rust, where anchor chains sit
At the pointier end of the boat!?
You squeeze through its miniscule door
To scrape, sand and curse and emote.
(In) tiny adit with eyes full of grit,
You exclaim: ‘You’re a silly old goat!’
But later, you feel her sails draw
And thoughts turn to harbours remote.
While safe in the cockpit you sit,
And pour a good wine while you gloat.

THanks for the chain locker explanation - I'm glad the questions prompted this post.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful question, Stafford: why after all that pain, both men and women, men and women as sailors, and women as mothers, do we go back for more?
ReplyDeleteYour poem offers a clue.
Can't answer the yachting question - but the pregnancy one - luckily we forget pain, for if we didn't all families would just have one child! I know I would!

.... Ah! Sweet mystery of life.
ReplyDeleteThe only boat I ever had was a canoe, but I do have it in my head that I would dearly love to live on the water. If only Peggy were amenable.
ReplyDeleteSelective memory enables us to remember the good parts and discount the bad as just what is required to get the good parts. We constantly look for the next good thing. If it were not true, we'd all just commit suicide.
ReplyDeleteIt is the anticipation of something better that makes life worth living.
Bwahahahaha - glad we clarified that - the end result sounds marvellous Stafford. Enjoy your sailing.
ReplyDeleteYes, you summed up my life long thoughts about sailing in those last two lines. I always thought it seemed to be far more work than fun!

Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see
ReplyDeleteif it can survive a twenty five foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My apple ipad is now broken and she has 83 views.
I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!
