'Smokin’ out' Gog and Magog.
It is unimaginable to me that one hundred and fifty years after Charles Darwin, the communications explosion and the concept of one humanity inhabiting a global village, we have foreign policy driven by Biblical Prophesy.
'Bush said, when he looked at the Middle East, he saw "Gog and Magog at work" and the biblical prophecies unfolding.' (The Guardian).
Ronald Reagan believed that 'Gog was code for the USSR', but like all such prophesies, they are vague enough to be applied locally to almost any enemy at any given time.
............................................
Smokin’ out Gog and Magog.
Just now I saw George on TV
Promoting his memoir, you see.
Written by hand,
His own, understand…
But guided by Richard Che-ney.
When asked: ‘Why the war in Iraq?
Why were you so keen to attack?’
He said “Shock and Awe
That’s what we went for
We needed so bad to hit back!”
‘But surely the UN applied
Inspectors to help you decide.
But you went ahead
Despite what they said.
We know your Intelligence lied!’
“Angered and shocked, now I know.”
“But dang it, Hans Blix was too slow!”
“Then Daddy said ‘Son,
Let’s all have some fun.
Let Dick and Don put on a show’.”
So tell me George, what is your creed?
What inspires you? What do you read?
He said, “Nothing new.
The Financial Review
And the Bible is all that I need.”
Pic borrowded from Encyclopaedia Britannica.
I guess you don't like him
ReplyDeleteHi Suz, he was a likeable fellow in his own down home way, but I am always dismayed that the wonderfully creative and basically compassionate people that are America, too often choose leaders via simplistic and slogan driven platitudes, as we do.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably not aware, but considering the influence US policy has on ours, we might as well be the 51st state!
So, we are always vitally interested in US politics and we sometimes joke that we Australians should be allowed to vote in your elections! :-)
Interesting that many presidential, political decisions spring from economic motivations. The Bible part can be tricky. I like the questions you pose in the last stanza.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that Blair (or, B Liar, as some would have it) is conspicuous by his absence.
ReplyDeleteHi Martin, of course you are right. Equally implicated are T Blair and J H Howard. And they had even less reason to be there.
ReplyDeleteYou are a man that stands and writes for what he believes Stafford....and that is an awesome thing....we may not see things completely eye to eye, but at least our voices are being heard and view points are being shared. :-)
ReplyDeleteYes, Carrie and thank you for your 'Voltiare' attitude, rare in this world of 'conform or else'.
ReplyDeleteHe also said: "Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices."
I read last week that there's people who don't believe in climate change because they reckon in the bible God said that the world would never be destroyed by man (after what happened with the great flood). That people read the bible so literally is just unbelievable. Thanks for your clever poem Stafford.
